The name of this piece means ‘to set one’s heart on, to long for’.
The Tāniko border at the base is multi layered, the dominant motif in this tāniko is the kaokao or armpit pattern representing strength. The diamond shape is the pātiki which represents abundance and the ability to look after your whānau.
